Amendments 13, 14, 15 to the United States Constitution
Morgan Dinkelfarb chooses to stay in the Washington D.C. area after the war in hopes of having a say in America's political future.  To his dismay, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the US Constitution have been passed.  Florida has been re-admitted to the Union by ratifying the Constitution and accepting these amendments.

Dinkelfarb is not happy with the 13th Amendment.  It frees slaves after all, and he had big dreams of purchasing some slaves after the war to build his own plantation empire.  That dream is now gone with the end of slavery.  Although he is not happy with the Amendment, he understands its reason.  He cannot tolerate the 15th Amendment, however.
